How it works

On Thursday February 27th, 2020 at 5:30 pm MST, teams will gather to compete in the
Terror Challenge! All teams (represented by at least 1 team member each) will be meeting at Vern's (622 8Ave SW, Calgary) for registration (if they have not already done so) and reception. Teams will also receive a sealed envelope with random elements to be used in their film. These elements can include but are not limited to: sub-genre, prop, line of dialogue, character, style, etc.
At exactly 7:00pm MST teams will be allowed to open their sealed envelope and this will mark the start of the Terror Challenge. Teams will have 96 hours to write, shoot, and edit their 3-7 minute short horror movie that incorporates all of the elements (e.g. a color, a prop, etc.) that they have received. All movies must be submitted no later than 8:00 pm MST on Monday March 2nd, 2020.Restrictions• The Terror Challenge is limited to 20 teams
• This is an 18+ location. ID may be requested at the door.
• Teams must be able to receive their challenge envelope and be able to drop off their final film in person.
• Films must include all three challenge elements provided in order to qualify for awards, and adhere to the scary Horror theme.
• All elements of creativity must take place within the 96 hour period. This is including, but not limited to: writing the script, costume/set design, shooting, editing, graphics and visual effects, animation, sound and music design.

Terror Challenge Rules

REGISTRATIONTeam Registration can be completed here. Each team can consist of one person or more and must submit a team name and have a Terror Challenge Envelop to compete in the challenge. Prizes will be limited to a 5 person team in mind. Vern's is an 18+ location, contestants must be able to prove their age, if requested.Due to time constraints the challenge is limited to 20 teams.REGISTRATION COSTCost of registration is $60.00THE CHALLENGEOn the Friday February 27th, 2020, at 5:30 pm teams (representative by at least one member) will meet at Vern’s (617 8 Avenue SW, Calgary) and must present proof of registration in the form of a ticket or email confirmation.Terror Challenge Envelops will be distributed upon team’s arrival and opened at 7:00pm MST, February 27th, 2020. Each envelope will contain three film elements to be incorporated into the film, a set of challenge rules, contact information for challenge organizers, and any other information needed for the teams. Teams or a team representative must physically receive the Challenge Envelop on location. Each Team must incorporate all three elements into their film.FILM FORMAT-Opening Slate/ Credits: Films must open with a 5 second opening slate with team name, title of the film, the three elements incorporated. The slate must be clean with a white/black composition.
-Aspect Ratio: Final film will be presented in 16:9 aspect ratio. If the film has been shot in any other ratio, it will be letter-boxed to fit the screen.
- Films must be high definition, and filmed at 1080p. If the film has been shot at a lower quality, it may result in less than ideal reception.
- Teams are responsible for providing their own equipment including: camera, costumes, props, sound and editing equipment.
- All elements of creativity must take place within the 96 hour (4 day) period. This is including, but not limited to: writing the script, costume/set design, shooting, editing, graphics and visual effects, animation, sound and music design.
- Work that can occur outside of the 96 hour time limit includes: Organization of cast and crew, securing the equipment needed, scouting and securing locations.
- Running time: The film must fall between 3 minutes and 7 minutes including opening and closing credits and the slate.
- The film can be made up of live action, animation, or a mixture of the two.
- Films must include all three challenge elements to qualify for awards, and adhere to the scary Horror theme.
- Music used in the film must be used within rights and permissions. Royalty free music is allowed, music with permissions is allowed. Teams must be able to provide artist’s permission if it is requested.
DROP OFF AND LATE ENTRIES:The final submission must be dropped off at Vern's (617 8 Avenue SW, Calgary) by 8:00pm Monday, March 2nd, 2020. Late entries (Received after 8:00 pm) will be considered for screening but are not eligible for any judged awards. In order for the late entry to be screened (if applicable), the Terror Challenge organizers must be notified that the film will be late, and an alternative drop-off will need to be organized.TERROR CHALLENGE SHOWCASE:(Note: Although the Showcase for this challenge has yet to be announced, rest assured that there will be one in the future.)
